Algol's Environmental Policy
Algol is a Finnish multi-branch industrial and pharmaceutical supplier specialising in technical trade whose history stretches back to 1894. Following its restructuring in 2004, Algol has three specialised business areas formed from its previous sales divisions that are based on Algol's traditional three product groupings: raw materials and semi-finished goods; machinery, equipment and special products; and healthcare products. These business areas, each with its own specialised operative unit - Algol Chemicals Oy, Algol Technics Oy and Algol Pharma Oy - operate with Algol Oy as their Parent Company, which co-ordinates, directs and supervises them. Algol's activities are based on the Group's shared values: reliability, customer focus, profitability and the will to develop.
Algol carried out an environmental review of its operations for the first time already in 1995 in order to assess the company's environmental impacts. Based on this review, the decision was made to create an environmental management system for chemical operations and to obtain environmental certification. Algol's environmental management system for chemical operations was subsequently certified according to the ISO 14001 standard in 1997.
The Algol Group's environmental impacts were reassessed in a review carried out in 2008. Significant environmental impacts were identified concerning Group-wide activities carried out on the Group level.
The key focus areas of the environmental management system in all Algol Group activities include complying with legal obligations and sector-specific regulations, improving occupational health and safety, preventing contamination to the environment and continuously upgrading the environmental management system itself. On the practical level, energy utilisation, environmental emissions and waste management are the main areas. When cooperating with its stakeholders, the Algol Group highlights environmental issues and assesses the significant environmental impacts caused by new development areas.
All business areas within the Algol Group comply with the principles of the certified environmental management system. All business areas participate in development projects connected with the environmental programme. Key projects include improving waste management by increasing recycling, enhancing occupational health and safety in Algol´s own activities and those of its co-operation partners, developing the crisis management system, and by favouring low-emission and energy-efficient solutions in our investments and purchases.
