Kaitos supplies drainage mats for the Kamppi Centre in Helsinki

Finland´s largest ever construction site was transformed into an entertainment
and shopping oasis complete with underground bus terminal when the Kamppi
Centre in Helsinki was officially opened to the public
on 2 March. The finishing touches are currently being made to the outdoor
squares and public spaces, which will soon have to withstand the footsteps of a
hundred thousand pedestrians a day. Beneath the granite stones, at a depth of
around half a metre, are Enkadrain drainage mats that have been supplied by
Kaitos.

Enkadrain is a multi-layer drainage composite made of a very permeable drainage
core covered on both sides with a non-woven filter. The total thickness is 10
millimetres. Enkadrain is lightweight and simple to install. With its high
discharge capacity, the material protects the landscape and structural height,
replacing traditional sand and gravel drains. It is fitted on top of the
concrete slab foundation and the bitumen waterproof coating, in this way
protecting the bitumen and preventing it from freezing. Between the Enkadrain
drainage mats and the pedestrians at the Kamppi centre are two layers: thermal
insulation, a concrete slab, fresh concrete and a granite covering.

According to Seija Voutilainen, Sales Engineer at Kaitos, Enkadrain was
selected for the Kamppi Centre due to its ideal combination of quality and
ease-of-use. The first deliveries of the total quantity amounting to 20,000
square metres were made in 2004. Since then Kaitos has received very high marks
in customer satisfaction surveys for its operations. Kaitos was able to make
precision deliveries, even on a daily basis, to the exact areas agreed to with
the contractor at this logistically challenging construction site, which is
surrounded by residential and commercial buildings in the centre of Helsinki.

The drainage mats supplied to the Kamppi Centre are Enkadrain Premium products
manufactured by Dutch company Colbond.The main contractor for the Kamppi Centre
is SRV Viitoset.
