Algol-Trehab presents a new product in Finland: A feeding robot

Freedom to eat independently!

The Bestic feeding robot is a new product that goes on sale in 2012. It was created and developed by Sten Hemmingsson, who is himself physically challenged. The inspiration was to help persons who require assistance when eating to move from a passive role to an active one and in this way become an equal dining companion in different everyday situations.

“The feeding robot means more independence and freedom of choice for individuals, thus enhancing the user's self-esteem and sense of dignity,” says Algol-Trehab’s Managing Director Kaarina Lampen, describing the key attributes of the invention.

Surprisingly small and quiet

The Bestic feeding robot weighs just 2.3 kilograms and has been designed to suit almost any kind of dining table. It can be conveniently taken with when going out to restaurants, school or work, as well as on trips. The robot can be plugged in to a normal socket, and it also has a rechargeable battery.
The feeding robot is controlled by switches or joysticks, depending on the nature of the user’s disability. The user can independently set the speed and select the desired food from the plate. The robot can be programmed for either solid foods or liquids.
The robot allows independent feeding for persons with reduced mobility in the upper limbs, for example due to:
 - Arthritis
 - Parkinson’s disease
 - Multiple sclerosis
 - Cerebral palsy
 - Spinal cord injury
 - ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)
 - Polio
 - Ataxia.

Algol-Trehab will present the new product on 10-12 November 2011 at the Technical Aid Fair at the Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre.
