Algol conveyors serve passengers at Kittilä Airport in Lapland
Travellers returning from their skiing holidays in Finnish Lapland can now
enjoy even more efficient service at Kittilä Airport, where the Civil Aviation
Administration (Finavia) has opened a new extension to the passenger terminal.
Situated visibly in the public space of the terminal, a shiny new Algol
conveyor system transports luggage from the check-in counters through security
control to the baggage hall, from where ground handling companies transport the
luggage to the aircraft.
Algol Technics was responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of
the conveyor system with Markus Kalkkila as Project Manager. The stainless
steel panels were supplied by Hakaniemen Metalli. The entire system was
completed in time for the peak Christmas and skiing holiday seasons.
According to Juhani Penttala, Product Manager at Algol Technics, the system
comprises approximately 260 metres of conveyors. The system was designed to
ensure an efficient and safe transfer process. The stainless steel covered
system is also an architectural element in the public space of the passenger
terminal.
The enlarged terminal at Kittilä Airport features eight check-in counters, all
of which are equipped with a suitcase conveyor belt. In addition, the system
includes four conveyors designed for sports equipment and other oversized
items, which leave the check-in counters at an angle of approximately 20
degrees. Each of the four special conveyors is shared by two check-in counters.
The capacity of the system is 1600 suitcases per hour.
The conveyor system was custom designed and purpose built to ensure the smoooth
and gentle transfer of passenger luggage. The built-in safety features include
gates that automatically close when the attendants at the check-in counters end
their shifts. The speed of some of the conveyors can also be adjusted.
This year Algol Technics will also deliver a new conveyor system for luggage
arriving at Kittilä Airport.
