Lead roofing material to historic Lyökki sea marker comes from Algol

Since 1757 the Lyökki sea marker has guided seafarers in the archipelago off
the town of Uusikaupunki in Southwestern Finland. Lyökki is the oldest such sea
marker in Finland and very rare for having survived in almost its original
condition throughout the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries.

These days the biggest threat to Lyökki is the weather, as the wet and stormy
maritime environment is gradually eroding its structures. Lyökki was last
restored more than twenty years ago, and the need for further work has been
clear for a long time. Ulkosaariyhdistys ry, an association for Finland´s outer
islands, has accepted the challenge. Having acquired ownership of the sea
marker, it is now working on its restoration in co-operation with the National
Board of Antiquities. This cultural work is also being supported by Algol
Technics, which has donated a quantity of lead sheets to help repair the roof.

Sakari Lindström, Chairman of Ulkosaariyhdistys, welcomes the donation, noting
that lead sheets were indeed the original roofing material used when Lyökki was
constructed. The restoration work on the roof will be performed partly on the
mainland due to the difficult transportation and weather conditions. Sales
Consultant Siw Rantala from Algol Technics´Products Group was responsible for
supplying the lead sheets.
